Gabby Harman’s paintings explore the intricate themes of landscapes, flowers, and still life. Her method involves a complex, visceral process of building layers, scoring back into them, applying and lifting paint to unveil older layers, and washing away paint to form flowing rivers. Her landscape works often depict geological formations and weathering, symbolising nature’s gradual decay through the seasons. Gabby’s paintings are multi-layered, tactile, textural, and abrasive. In her floral and still life pieces, she adopts a gentler, more realistic palette while maintaining her deep appreciation for colour and texture.
Gabby’s artistic journey typically starts with small sketches made in charcoal, ink, or graphite during walks with her dogs or travels abroad, striving to capture the essence of the places she visits. Movement and colour are integral to her creations. With a background in textile design from Brighton Polytechnic and experience as an interior designer, she turned to painting seriously once her children were in school full-time. She collaborates with a group of artists and has been active in the local art scene for years. Her work has gained recognition at the Mall Gallery in the Royal Institute of British Artists exhibitions, the Chelsea Arts Society Summer Exhibition, and a successful solo show at Green and Stone in 2022. Gabby’s work is driven by a dedication to portraying the beauty of nature and the landscapes she encounters daily.
