Spalted Beach Hollow Form

By Malcolm Cleaver

20cm tall x 19cm diameter

‘Spalting’ is the natural process of decay in wet fallen wood. In beech, if you are lucky, this process can produce some wonderful patterns and a matrix of black lines and swirls. If not managed carefully, however, the process will go too far and the wood will become too soft and weak to use. It is highly prized for its unique character.

Once fully dry the spalting process ceases. Each such piece is sealed and then waxed
