"My painting practice is grounded in observation, drawing inspiration from the changing light and colour of landscapes near my home in the South Downs as well as working from still lifes that I set up in the studio.
I begin by sketching in charcoal and gouache, often working en plein air in the landscape to capture the essence of the scene. These initial sketches serve as the foundation for larger works, which I develop further in the studio.
I will then spend some time mixing a palette of harmonious colours before working spontaneously exploring the interplay of colour, composition, mark-making, and form. This time working back in the studio allows me to paint more intuitively as well as blurring the boundaries between reality and imagination.
I do not attempt to replicate a place or subject but rather create painterly and lyrical paintings that I hope will resonate with the viewer.
